Lei

I made a Hawaiian Lei using construction paper, string, and straws.  First I made flowers out of construction paper and a watercolor abstract painting.  Once the flowers are made and cut out; a hole punch was used to create a whole in the middle of the flower.  Also I cut the straws into 2 inch pieces.  I took the string and made a loop on one end and then placed a bobbie pin on the other end to help string the flowers.  After that is ready to start stringing the flowers and straws.  Start with a flower followed by the 2 inch straw then a flower, then a straw again.  Continue the process until their are at least 24 straws and flowers.  Once finished tie and wear!

Extension:
Create these in your classroom and the students can hand them to the staff in the school.  Also in Social Studies class the students could research the Hawaiian culture.

Clay Making

This is a clay coiled pot.  First you start by getting all the bubbles out of the clay.  After the bubbles are all out you begin making your pot.  I created the base which is about at big as the plum of my hand and about a half of inch think.  After that was complete I began rolling out my coils.  Be sure to keep the rolls even.  Once I was ready to begin place the coils on the base I had to make slits that bound the coils together.  Continue rolling and binding the coils until all clay is used.  Once you are finish you want to smooth the inside of the pot.  I used water and fingers to smooth out the coils in the inside.  I let dry over night and then painted on my design.

Extension:
Have students write a compare and contrast paper with the different types of pots used today and back than.  You could also ask the students how they would use the pots that they created.

Sunnyville

This was a 3D are project.  I took different sizes and shapes of construction paper and twisted them, curcled them and crunched them.  I put a dot of elemers glue on each end of the construction paper.  I attached different pieces to other pieces to gain height. This project was inspired by the Dr. Suess book, Oh, the place you'll go.

Extension:
Have a social studies lesson with the students and travel to different places throughout the classroom. They should stop at each station and garther material to create a 3D project.

Railroad Printing

In this project we created a South Dakota sceenwith a railroad.  The rail cars were made with a technique called print making.  I stated out by making a design in a foam square.  As I was making the design I was making sure that I did not press to hard.  Once my design was complete I used a print making color and rolled it onto the square foam, making sure not to get to thick.  Don't want the ink to leak in the cracks on your design.  Once rolled on the design I then stamped the square on a black piece of construction paper.  When dry I cut out the boxes and added wheels.

Extension:
I think that it would be great for each student to make their own giant rail car.  The rail car design would have to be away of the student to introduce themselves to the class.  Once each student makes their rail car the teacher could connect the cars around the room.  It would be a great activity for the students and teacher to get to know each other.

Marble

1) The first step is to find a picture and draw it.
2) Outline it with perminit black marker.
3) Spray shaving cream in a flat pan.
4) Smooth the shaving cream in the pan.
5) Drop a few drops of color into the the shaving cream.
6) Use a paint brush to swirle paint around in the shaving cream.
7) Then press picture down into the shaving cream. (besure that all parts of the picture are covered)
8) Pull picture out of shaving cream and scrap off excess shaving cream.

Extention:
Abstract picture
Have the studetns makes shapes in the shaving cream.  Different lines and different textures could also be done in the shaving cream.

Lesson Three "Macrame Madness"

We used a technique called macrame to create key chains. First you take four pieces of twine and tie them into a loop at one end.  Then you start making your design by tying different knots.  After a few knots were tied then I added beads until I got to the very end and finished it off with a loop.
 Extension:

Students could create necklaces and brackets using the same technique.  They could make something for mothers day as well.

Lesson Two "Hoppy in Plaid"

We created this bulletin board for our bunnies to hang on.  We wanted it to be a representation of spring time.   We had a blue background with flowers on it.  Everything was created with bulletin board paper.  The letters, flowers, and boarder were all made out of bulletin board paper.  We painted the grass and stems on our bulletin board and lastly we added our students artwork.
Plaid Bunnies

It was Easter time and I created a bunny using complimentary colors.  Most plaid that is seen is made up of complimentary colors so we created plaid bunnies.  I used red and green as my complimentary colors.  The paint that was used was watered down tempera paint.  When creating the plaid pattern I made sure that I used different thickness of lines.  The lines were created first on a white piece of construction paper.  After the paint was dry I traced the bunny and cut it out.  Then glued the bunny together on construction paper and cut it out leaving a little boarder.  After the bunny was put together I drew a face and added a cotton ball as its tall.

Extension Activity
Have the students go on a scavenger hunt!  Have them search for items that have plaid patterns.  They can take pictures and create a collages of plaid.

Lesson One "Spring into Drawing"

This was a drawing lesson about drawing with a shield and focusing on the object or picture.  I used a oil pastel to draw a spring picture.  We were directed to use either a white oil pastel or a white crayon.  After my spring scene was drawn, I then used a brush and water to wet down my paper.  After the paper was damp, I used watercolor paints to paint the spring scene.  The oil pastel crayon didn't absorb the paint so you were still able to see the drawing of the spring picture after you painted over it.

Extension
The students could write a story about spring time and what they enjoy doing in the spring.  The picture they draw would tell their story about spring.

Hidden Safari

Can you find me?
In this picture, I drew a picture of a elepant upside down.  You want to use a little blue colored pencil to get the best effect.  The lighter you draw your lines that easier it will be to hide the animal.  After you draw your picture you want to use warm colors to hide your animal.  You want to create patterns that distract your eyes.  Lines that are both horizontial and vertical are great.  Geomentric shapes that are colored in are good, but when you color them in try not to create the shapes on the lines of the animal becasue it makes it eaiser to see.  When drawing shapes to distract the eye you want to make them diffent sizes as well.  After finished with the picture you can view the animal with glasses that are tinted red.  When you use the red glasses it doesn't distract the naked eye from seeing the animal.  The glasses in a way block out the warm colors and then the cool colors stand out.

Extention:
In a Science class, the teacher could use this activity to explain how certain animals hide themselves from other animals in the wild. The teacher can talk about why animals hide themselves and the importance.  Students could create there own animals and they could give clues to the other students.   After the activity is complete the teacher could then display the students work with different colored glasses and the title of the board could be, "I hide to stay alive!"

Eric Carl Story Illustration

First I took white paper and painted different colors on it and then let that dry.  I painted several different sheets with different colors to create the color of my drawings that I made to go on my story page.  I created a page of a butterfly that meets a flower that later becomes here new best friend.  The story is about a butterfly that is lonely and can never find a friend to talk to, so on a bright summer day she was flying this beautiful flower said "hello!"  And from then on they were friends and played every day.

Extension:
I would have my student create a page for a classroom book.  Each page will be about either the activities they did, field trips they went on, assemblies they seen, or things they learned in the classroom.  They would still use the Eric Carl techniques but their pages would be about what happened that year in school!

Van Gogh Tissue Collage

Night Life
It is my interpretation of what a city is like at night.
·         The steps to complete this project:
o   First I took tissue paper and made coils from different color tissue paper.
o   Then I cut out waves of pink and orange.
o   After cutting out all the movement shapes I wanted, I than began pasting down the tissue paper with acrylic paste to a sheet of construction paper.
o   While that was drying I created 3D sky scrapers using chalk.
o   When the tissue paper was dry, I used oil pastels to outline the movement in the project.
o   Once that was complete I than glued on my city and my project was complete.
·         An Extension activity:
o   Have the student’s put on an exhibit.
§  The community could be invited and you could have each student explain their art piece when the people walked around.  You are allowing the students to learn and teach at the same time.  I think this would be a great idea for 5th and 6th grade students.

The Van Gogh Finger Painting

Fireside
It is my interpretation of a campfire.
·         The steps to complete this project:
  1. Movement has to be created in the picture, so I took my fingers and started making blue swirls for the sky.
  2. After the sky was dry and complete, I made a yellow sun.
  3. The next step was creating the fire.  I used red, orange, and yellow paint.  And pulled my fingers across the paper towards the top.  This created movement in my fire.
  4. I took blue, black, and white and swirled it around in the sky.  This was the smoke from the fire.  I used more black and white then blue.
  5. Grass and the fire were logs were the last part of my project to complete the painting.
  6. After I let dry I than framed it with construction paper.
An Extension to this activity:
  • Students could right reflect about the feelings toward the paint.  Or when they look at the painting what type of feeling to they feel.
    • For example, mine would be a warm cozy feeling because it makes me think of family and sitting around a fire place.
  • You could have the student s do their interpretation of the seasons.  Each student will have a different idea.  They must include movement throughout their work.  There are way different ideas you can do with this project, it is a great way for students to feel movement.

Extension

You could use this same lesson in an elementary classroom, but with a different approach.  A classroom tree, students would trace their hands and their hands would be the leaves on the tree.  Each student would create a hand representing themselves.
Another classroom activity would be working art into the language art class.  Students could create a personal poem and they can only use other material besides their writing utensils to write their poem.  A word could be represented by a picture and they could use clippings from other paper products.

Personal Footprint

Footprint
This is a story of my life in a footprint.  The materials I used in this project were tissue paper, magazine article, cotton ball, scrapbooking stickers, gems, and a wedding announcement.
My favorite season is fall and the tree was made from various colors of tissue paper.
I love boating with my family; the sun is a painted cotton ball and the boat is a scrapbooking sticker.
I have been coast to coast in a car and my family farms.  The gems represent by love for sparkle.  Great project for teachers to get to know their students in a creative way!
